Hello, I’m Cam!
Here’s why I’m applying:

When I left behind Hollywood and moved to San Francisco, I didn’t know how I would revive the film and storytelling career path that I’d been forging for the last four years. But moving here had felt right.

So, I found a job with the Parks Conservancy, in the gift store on Alcatraz. Instead of reviewing scripts and prepping sets, I was selling “fog globes” in the cell house of the most infamous prison in the world.
It was quite a change.

But in the years since then, I’ve found a new home for my visual storytelling pursuits, right here in San Francisco. I’ve learned and told stories of conservation. I’ve photographed the parks in every light. I’ve come to learn: who needs Hollywood, when you got the GGNRA?

This page covers my relevant experience and capabilities, provides work samples, and highlights what I’d bring to the Videographer/Photographer role at the Conservancy.

Video Storytelling

There are hundreds of important, park-forward projects happening across the Bay Area.

Whether it’s the conservation tale of how biologists restored Redwood Creek or an inspiring feature on the volunteer gardeners of Alcatraz, I use video to bring park stories to life. Relying on technical capability, narrative intuition, and adaptive aesthetic, my video work not only informs, but inspires.

Scriptwriting/Storyboarding for Video

Should the need for scripted videos arise, I come prepared. For example: say you need a 2-minute-long YouTube Video with a wildlife ecologist explaining the appropriate responses to a coyote sighting. I bring experience in script outlining, screenwriting, and storyboarding, which comes in handy for video topics that are of an educational, narrative-oriented nature, such as this. It’s especially useful when you’re working with “talent,” or in this case, the wildlife ecologist, who is acting as spokesperson for the message.

Below are links to educational videos that I wrote scripts for and later recorded and edited, as part of the “Science!” series at Peninsula Open Space Trust. Warning: The Videos Are Silly.

Event Photography

I am comfortable attending and photographing park-related events. My photographic approach seeks to cover the event itself, but also to capture folks’ experiences at the event.

The below pictures were taken at the Golden Gate Park “Queers Of A Feather” event, an LGBTQ+ community gathering focused on birdwatching. This event is organized by Peninsula Open Space Trust and made possible by partners including the Parks Conservancy.

Interviewing

Videos are enhanced when subject matter experts can weigh in, exhibiting their knowledge and passion.

As a videographer seeking to tell compelling and true stories, I exhibit confidence, etiquette, and professionalism in interviewing subjects for video communications.

P.S. – I also know how to ensure people are positioned in good lighting! (-:

Park B-Roll/Imagery

Going out to take photos of the surrounding natural beauty is one of my favorite San Francisco pastimes. And the best place to go find natural beauty? It’s in the parks!

Obtaining attractive, up-to-date video and photo material of our parks is crucial for both related print materials and video projects. My skillset includes a combination of equipment savvy and creative vision, which proves useful in capturing the essence of our parks, and translating the experience of moving through them.

Thanks for viewing! Hope to talk soon.
